Anatomy
Worth knowing before you compare quotes — this is the vocabulary every estimator will use, including ours.
The horizontal channel along the eave. On a seamless system this is one unbroken length; on sectional it is 10-foot pieces joined with sealant.
Brackets holding the run to the fascia. Hidden hangers screw through the board every 24 inches; older spike-and-ferrule systems work loose over time.
Close off the ends of a run. Sealed on the inside — a weeping end cap is one of the most common small leaks we fix.
The corner joints where two runs meet. On a seamless system these are the only joints in the horizontal run, which is why they matter.
The hole punched in the base of the run where water leaves for the downspout. Position and number decide whether the system copes with a downpour.
The vertical pipe and its bends. Their job is not just to bring water down but to carry it far enough from the foundation.
Two quotes for "125 feet of gutter" can be hundreds apart and both be honest. The difference is almost always in the parts above: hidden hangers versus spikes, the number of outlets, whether downspout extensions are included, and the gauge of the aluminium. Ask for those four line items and the quotes become comparable.
Lifespan
Manufacturer figures assume a mild climate. These are the numbers we actually see on Minnesota houses.
