For leaves, needles and seed pods — yes, that is exactly what they are designed for. What they do not do is make the system maintenance-free: fine grit and shingle granules still wash through and settle, so plan on a rinse every few years rather than a clean every autumn.
Under heavy pine needle cover, fine aluminium mesh. Under broad-leaf trees, perforated or solid aluminium handles volume better and lasts longer. Plastic screens are the cheapest option and make sense on a shed or a short run, not on a house you plan to keep.
Usually yes, provided the run is sound and hung at the right pitch. If the gutter sags or the hangers have pulled loose, fixing that comes first — a guard on a bad run just hides the problem.
They do not cause ice dams, and they do not prevent them either. Ice forms when warm attic air melts snow that then refreezes at the cold eave. That is a ventilation and insulation issue, and we will say so rather than sell you a guard as the cure.
